Flying Saucer Draught Emporium Teams Up With Pints for Prostates to Promote Men’s Health Belgian Beer Month Promotion Includes Chance to Win Trip for Two to Beer Heaven

DALLAS, TEXAS – The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium is teaming up with Pints for Prostates during a four week “Belgian Beer Month” promotion designed to reach men through the universal language of beer. The 15-location family of beer pubs will generate prostate cancer awareness from June 27 to July 21as part of a salute to Belgian beer that will culminate in a drawing for a trip for two to Belgium.

Flying Saucer will raise funds during the event to support the Pints for Prostates awareness mission. Each Wednesday as part of its popular “Brewery Night,” the Flying Saucer will feature a different Belgian-style beer with the brand’s signature logo glassware. The first 144 people at each location will be able to get the glass of the week and a pour of the featured beer for a great price, with the price of the glass going to support Pints for Prostates. Each glass will come with a raffle ticket for a drawing for a special beer trip for two to Belgium from Sept. 7-15, 2012.

“We have hosted Pints for Prostates events at several of our locations in the past and we are excited to be working with them on this chain-wide awareness celebration,” said Keith Schlabs of the Flying Saucer. “Our ‘Beerknurds’ are big fans of Belgian ales. This opportunity to support a great cause and giveaway a beer adventure of a lifetime to Belgium will be a huge hit with our customers.”

The special Pints for Prostates Belgian Beer Tour is organized by BeerTrips.com. The raffle includes round trip airfare for two from the continental U.S.; seven nights lodging in Brussels, Brugge and Gent; tours of famous breweries, including Chimay, Cantillon and Moortgat; escorted café crawls; guide city tours; breakfast daily, three beer dinners and two beer lunches; train and private coach transportation. For a $10 donation for a single ticket, $25 donation for three tickets or $50 for seven tickets, Flying Saucer patrons can obtain additional entries in the drawing. The total value of the trip for two is estimated at $6,500. The drawing will be held on July 21, at the Flying Saucer’s Charlotte location. The prize is non-transferable and no cash substitute will be offered. The winner and their guest are responsible for obtaining passports and all trip related costs not outlined above. You must be 21 years old to enter. No purchase is necessary.

Visit Flanders and Delta Air Lines are donating round trip tickets for the trip. Beer brands supporting the promotion at The Flying Saucer include Chimay, Blanche de Bruxelles, Timmermans and Maredsous.

“It is great to be working with The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium because they will help us reach thousands of men with a lifesaving message about the importance of early detection,” said Rick Lyke, a beer journalist who had successful prostate cancer surgery in 2008. “BeerTrips.com has put together a fantastic trip to Beer Heaven –Belgium – which we will appropriately award on July 21, Belgian Independence Day.”

BeerTrips.com has been providing unique beer travel experiences to destinations around the world since 1998. This special Pints for Prostates group tour to Belgium is limited to a total of 16 slots and is already sold out. The tour will be hosted by Lyke, the Pints for Prostates founder and a drinks journalist who has been writing about beer, wine and spirits for 30 years. He has visited Belgium several times and considers it one of the world’s top beer destinations. Pints for Prostates is a 501(c)3 charity that reaches men through the universal language of beer with an important health message.

“Men are 33 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer than women are to have breast cancer, yet few men know about the critical importance of early detection,” Lyke said. “The support of the Flying Saucer, Visit Flanders, Delta, Chimay, Blanche de Bruxelles, Timmermans and Maredsous will help us reach an audience that needs to hear our message.”

HICKORY, North Carolina – April 20, 2012 – After months of being cloaked in secrecy, The Skull Coast Brewing Company, Inc. (“Skull Coast”), is pleased to announce that it will be setting up its brewing operations in the former “Hollar Hosiery Mill” in Hickory, North Carolina.

As part of a multi-million dollar historic preservation and redevelopment project, Skull Coast will be occupying the ground floor of the eastern “hanger” structure of the site. Access to the project’s only loading dock makes it ideal for Skull Coast’s operations.
In addition to the 30-bbl brewing system, currently being constructed by Bavarian Brewing Technologies, Skull Coast will be installing a Cask automated canning system to produce craft beer cans for off-premise accounts, and a roughly 1500 square foot taproom.

“We are unbelievably excited to have the opportunity to begin brewing again soon in our our own space, and hope to add in our own small way to the growing reputation and rich tradition of outstanding North Carolina breweries,” says Dave Fox, Skull Coast’s “Chief Drinking Officer.”

The developers of the Hollar Hosiery Mill project anticipate breaking ground in the next several weeks, and estimate that the Skull Coast Brewery portion of the overall project will be set to open in the Summer of 2012.

PRESS RELEASE:

Oscar Wong, President of Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, NC has been named the 2012 North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year by the North Carolina Small Business Association (SBA). After selling his engineering business and retiring to the North Carolina Mountains, he opened the first brewery in the Asheville, NC area in 1994. Highland Brewing Company now employs 34 people. Wong recently built a new state of the art production facility and tasting room. With the help of an SBA 504 loan of $813,000, from Avista Business Development Corporation, Oscar was able to get needed equipment including giant stainless steel tanks. Combined with a loan from BB&T, the finance package total was $1.9 million.

Wong grew up in a family business in Jamaica. His parents emigrated from China and started a mom and pop grocery store.

With his engineering background, he recognized that commercial dairy tanks would be excellent for the fermentation and storage of his ales. These could be acquired cheaply and re-designed for beer production.

Wong started the brewery with three employees in 4,000 sq. ft. of leased space in the basement of a tavern. Highland then could produce up to 6,500 barrels of beer per year. At that time, the beer was sold in kegs only. The basement had no room for a bottling line.

In their current location, they now can brew over 35,000 barrels annually. Highland offers ten varieties of Ales, Porters, Stouts, Lager and Wheat beers which are sold in seven Southeastern states.

Oscar is exploring new markets for his product. His plans have evolved to offering beer as a component of other products made by small local independent manufacturers. These include mustards, ice cream and shampoo.

Wong has had a tremendous impact on the region. Eight other local breweries have opened in the area. This led to Asheville’s being recognized in 2011 as “Beer City USA” by the National Beer Examiner for the third year in a row. Competing cities for this honor include Milwaukee, San Diego and Portland.

In 2011, The Asheville Chamber of Commerce awarded him the William A.V. Cecil Tourism Leadership Award.
This award recognizes a leader in the hospitality industry who has helped guide the tourism industry for Western North Carolina. The Cecil award named after the owner of the Biltmore Estate and Winery, the largest privately owned residence in the U.S. that brings a million visitors a year to Asheville.

Oscar routinely gives back to his community. He supports organizations like the local ARC (previously the Association of Retarded Citizens and the Manna Food Bank. Oscar is also active in the Rotary Club and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.

Highland offers tours of the brewery complete with a tasting for a donation to the food bank or a contribution of non-perishable food as the price of admission. Highland provides a venue for several non-profit fundraisers and also actively supports the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Trout Unlimited and more. Oscar and his wife Anna have two daughters.

“THE BIG BREW HA” RETURNS WITH COFFEE, TEA, BEER AND “OLD WORLD, NEW FLAVOR” CUISINE AT THE MINT MUSEUM UPTOWN

CHARLOTTE, NC – Several noted restaurants and caterers will offer “Old World, New Flavor” fare at The Big Brew Ha, complete with all things brewed (coffee, tea and beer) on the top floor of the Mint Museum Uptown on Friday, April 27, 2012, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. This is the second year of The Big Brew Ha, more than 150 patrons turned out last year, raising more than $6,000 to help preserve one of the oldest buildings on Tryon Street.

Admission is $60 per person; all participants will receive a commemorative beer stein. Free parking will be provided in The Green parking deck next to St. Peter’s Church. Tickets and other details are available at www.thebigbrewha.com.

With a comfortable but fashionable European pub feel, The Big Brew Ha menu will include Italian and Tuscan delights from Dean & Deluca Catering, Polish favorites from Harvest Moon Grille, and The Flying Biscuit Café. Coffee will be provided by Counter Culture Coffee.

Between sampling gourmet “pub grub” and corresponding brews, event-goers will be entertained by audience favorites from last year, including the band “Side Effect” and the ever competitive “Brew Pong Tournament” (a refined version of “beer pong” where the winning team gets a secret grand prize worth $200). New games (including a more “Classic Cornhole”) have been added to take advantage of the Mint Museum’s rooftop terrace. The Brew Ha “Balloon Pop” is back, guaranteeing a surprise (anything from restaurant gift cards to concert tickets) for $20 a pop.

Promotional support is provided by Nova Office Strategies, Charlotte Magazine and YELP.

All festivities will feature the backdrop of the Charlotte skyline as seen at the 5th Floor of the new Mint Museum Uptown, located across from St. Peter’s Catholic Church. St. Peter’s recently underwent an extensive preservation project, to restore the exterior of the church, the cornerstone of which was laid in 1893. The Big Brew Ha will ensure the church will stay in tiptop condition for many years to come.

About St. Peter’s Catholic Church
St. Peter’s Catholic Church is one of the oldest buildings on Tryon Street, for which the original cornerstone was laid in 1851. According to a former pastor, “For 90 years it was the only Catholic church in the city. It’s easy to interpret this church’s role in the city in light of the name Jesus gave Peter…Rock.” The mission of St. Peter’s is to grow in faith through worship, prayer, outreach, education and action. St. Peter’s has been staffed by the Jesuits since 1986. Learn more at www.stpeterscatholic.org.
