Papazian in AshevillePresident of the Brewers Association and Founder of the American Homebrewers Association Charlie Papazian will be in Asheville later this month as the keynote speaker for an educational event presented by The North Carolina Brewers Guild and Asheville Brewers Alliance.

A North Carolina cask ale event will take place the night before at Barley’s featuring confirmed casks from Fullsteam, Foothills, Big Boss and Duck Rabbit with more TBA. Coincidence? I think not!

The North Carolina Brewers Guild, in partnership with the Asheville Brewers Alliance, are pleased to welcome special guest Charlie Papazian, President of the Brewers Association and Founder of the American Homebrewers Association, as keynote speaker for our February educational event.

Charlie’s talk will focus on general beer styles and personal experiences with yeast. He will also present updates on governmental affairs and legislative developments and leave plenty of time for Q&A. Come meet and share a pint with a pioneer of the homebrewing movement.

We are also excited to announce two other speakers preceding Charlie’s presentation: Kevin Sudderth of Hach, who will be talking to us about oxygen pick-up/testing and HopUnion, LLC, who will offer us an update on the hop market and an outlook on hops.

Admission includes a buffet-style barbecue dinner and two drink tickets for your choice of Highland pints.

The Brewers Association had their 2010 World Beer Cup awards ceremony tonight and North Carolina breweries placed well with 4 winning entries from Foothills, Duck Rabbit, Outer Banks Brewing Station and Olde Hickory Brewery taking home medals.

Here is the category run down and the medals won:

Herb and Spice Beer or Chocolate Beer Catagory
Outer Banks Brewing Station (Kill Devil Hills, NC) takes home a Silver medal for their Lemon Grass Wheat Ale

Sweet Stout Catagory
The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery (Farmville, NC) takes home the gold for their Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout

Old Ale Catagory
Olde Hickory Brewery (Hickory, NC) takes silver for their Irish Walker

American-Style Imperial Stout Catagory
Foothills Brewing (Winston-Salem, NC) get a silver medal for Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout

According to BA: “This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries and 47 U.S. states vied for awards with 3,330 beers entered in 90 beer style categories.”

The Brewers Association, the trade association that tabulates production statistics for U.S. breweries, today released 2009 data on the U.S. craft brewing industry. In a year when other brewers saw a slowdown in sales, small and independent craft brewers saw sales dollars increase 10.3 percent and volume increase 7.2 percent over 2008, representing a growth of 613,992 barrels equal to roughly 8.5 million cases.
