Queen City Brewers Festival

Queen City Beer Fest

The Queen City Brewers Festival (QCBF) IS Charlotte on Tap. Premiering at the Neighborhood Theatre (511 E. 36th Street, Charlotte, NC, 28205), on Saturday, February 4, 2012, QCBF is exclusive to the Charlotte-area breweries that are putting the Queen City on the craft beer map. The event will feature a diverse selection of beer styles and flavors to taste and learn about from official brewery representatives. With Charlotte’s craft beer market exploding in recent years, the goal of this event is to spotlight the city’s emerging craft breweries and to bring awareness to the event’s nonprofit host, Partners for Parks, a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation that seeks to promote and enhance parks, recreation and open space in neighborhoods throughout Mecklenburg County and the surrounding area.

More than thirty craft beers will be on hand with each brewery showcasing its full lineup of beers. Brewers are encouraged to bring one “super” flavor or style of beer especially for QCBF, as the event takes place the day before the Super Bowl.

QCBF will partner with Charlotte-based food vendors, and guests will also enjoy live music.

Tickets will be $20 & go on sale Monday, November 21st

Belgian Badge on Untappd

VANBERG & DEWULF ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIP WITH UNTAPPD, CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY COAST TO COAST TOAST

Vanberg & DeWulf co-founder, Wendy Littlefield, revealed that the Belgian beer import specialist is partnering with the year-old, fast-growing site and mobile app for beer enthusiasts, Untappd. Untappd will unveil their Belgian beer badge in Vanberg & DeWulf’s honor on Tuesday, November 15th.

November 15th is the day (and night) of the Coast to Coast Toast ™. It is expected to bethe single largest one-day national celebration of Belgian beer culture held in the USA this millennium. An estimated 350 bars, restaurants, and shops across America will feature Vanberg & DeWulf beers and raise a toast to the importer that has been singularly dedicated to building Belgian beer connoisseurship in the USA. To find the beers and the hosts for the events, people need only consult the Vanberg & DeWulf and Untappd sites. Find the locations hosting toasts on the Coast to Coast Toast™ Eventbrite page and check in with the beers on Untappd.

Much excitement surrounds the launch of a new badge at Untappd. There have been more than 2 million “check-ins” in year one alone. To earn the Belgian badge Untappers need to try at least one (1) “related” beer and share it on Untappd. Starting November 15th and for a month, the Belgian badge can only be earned by “checking in” with Vanberg & DeWulf’s beers. Aspiring badge-earners have the option to be entered into a drawing to win a trip for two to Belgium sponsored by The Belgian Tourist Office and Delta Airlines.

VANBERG & DEWULFThe Coast to Coast Toast ™ is at once an anniversary party and a salute to the people and places that have done so much to build today’s vibrant US beer culture. Participants span two generations of craft beer advocates – uniting pioneers like Lucky Baldwin’s and Toronado (CA), Monk’s, Eulogy and Tria (PA), Higgins and Belmont Station (Portland), Hopleaf, Map Room (IL), Winking Lizard (Ohio), BJ’s (the West) and Flying Saucer (6 states), Gingerman, DBA (NYC), and the Brickstore (GA) and more recently minted “Heroes of the Good Beer Movement” ™ like El Rey Burrito Lounge and J Clyde (Alabama), The Publican and Bluebird (Chicago), Church Key (Washington, D.C.) , Capital Bar and Grill (Arkansas), Jimmy’s 43, Rattle N Hum, Vandaag, and Blue Monk (NY), The Fred (GA), and Redlight Redlight (Florida) to name but a few.

Not just on premise locations are participating in the celebration. Retailers all around the country – from Tully’s in Wells, Maine to Whole Foods on the Bowery in NYC, from Binny’s in Chicago to Wine Thief and Ale Jail in St Paul, MN – are taking part in the party.

“We have had a great career that has allowed us to pursue our love of Belgium and Belgian beer. As our 30th anniversary approached, we were absolutely convinced that we had to send a huge bear hug to our friends and colleagues. They took up our passion and together we changed how Americans enjoy beer ” said Wendy Littlefield. “Untappd lets us spread the love in a new and unprecedented ways,” added Don.

FOOTHILLS goes FOOTBALL

FOOTHILLS to begin offering beer at Panther’s Games this season.

READ IT AT THE SOURCE HERE

CHARLOTTE – Foothills Brewing will start selling some of its beers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte for the Carolina Panthers games, beginning with Fan Fest this weekend.

“We’re going to have four of our beers at three different stations,” said Jamie Bartholomaus, the president, co-owner and brewmaster of Foothills Brewing in Winston-Salem.

Bartholomaus expects the sports venue to bring in good sales and increase awareness of Foothills’ brands.

The company has been selling its beers at the RBC Center in Raleigh for three years and at the Durham Bulls stadium in Durham for four years.

In January, Foothills Brewing announced the acquisition of Carolina Beer & Beverage and a renovation project for its second production site in Winston-Salem.

Bartholomaus said Monday that he hopes to be making beer at Foothills’ second production location at 3800 Kimwell Drive in Stratford Industrial Park within the next few months.

5Q: The Queen City Scene

Charlotte, North Carolina holds the largest population in the state but when it comes to the beer scene it seems like the Queen City the new kids on the block. Just a few short years ago they boasted a brewpub, beer store, a couple beer bars and one of the largest Beer festivals in the state but not a lot in they way of respect. Along with some of the breweries and bars who were able to lure the attention of Beer Advocate’s Alstrom Brothers and Stone Brewing’s Greg Koch there is a growing culture of bloggers and beer fans who are shaping their image one beer at a time. Blair Primis started the blog queencitybeer.com and he volunteered his time, to discuss the Queen City beer scene:

1 A few years ago I couldn’t tell you anything about the scene in Charlotte and a lot has changed in a short period of time. What’s the over all beer culture like now?
The culture has grown and there’s a buzz about the area. We’ve got bloggers, like Charlottebeer.com & Queencitybeer.com, writers/commentors, like @qcbeerguru, @rynrrck & @ryan_self beer vendors like Vintner Wine Market (great beer too) & Brawley’s Beverage, great tap rooms, like Duckworths & soon to open CC Hooks Taphouse, great beer lists at restaurants, new and passionate brewers, like Olde Mecklenburg and NoDa Brewing and a vibrant social media scene. Even Batch Apparel, an awesome craft beer influenced t-shirt company, is based here in Charlotte. Very different from when I moved here in 2007.

2 Name some beer bars in the Queen City and how they’re pushing the craft beer movement. Places like Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse; 50 or so beers on draft, educated staff and a great variety available. Vintner Wine Market, great bottle selection, and awesome tap list with an actively used randall. Brawley’s Beverage, great beer store, bottles, kegs and a bunch of rare stuff. CC Hooks, soon to open, will also help establish Charlotte as a serious beer town. These just scrape the surface.

3 And how about Charlotte’s breweries? What are they up to? And who are the new guys? Olde Meck continues to produce great beer…adding a pilsner to their line-up this spring. They’ve got a great community presence and work hard to be at events and host their own. NoDa brewing is a great up and comer…also making great beer and ingratiating themselves within the beer community as well. Birdsong brewing and Four Friends are also in town and helping to make the local beer scene even more vibrant.

4 Tell me about Queencitybeer.com. When did it start? Is there anyone else involved or is it a one man show? Just started it in 2011, after talking about doing it for years…ha. Just me, one man show…I collaborate a lot with other beer folks in town. Charlottebeer.com for example.

5 What is in your beer fridge right now? Well, I’ve got Olde Hickory Imperial Stout and Great Divide Grand Cru on tap…in the fridge; I’ve got some Victory Storm King, a DogfishHead My Antonia, a few Blue Point Hoptical Illusions and a Heavy Seas Loose Cannon.

50 Back Lager

Press release explains that beer you might of seen at Harris Teeter:

Pepperell, MA (April 25, 2011) –North Carolina is the second state in the US to carry 50 Back, The Brew of the Brave. The American-style lager, which donates 50 percent of its profits to veteran organizations, is now available in Harris Teeter stores statewide.

50 Back beer was created by Massachusetts residents Paige Haley and Kimberly Rogers. Newcomers to the beer industry, Haley and Rogers came up with the idea of 50 Back after searching for a way to give back to Troops and Veterans. For every purchase of 50 Back, the company donates half of its net profits to charities committed to supporting veterans and active duty service members and their families, all of whom who have sacrificed much to protect this nation and the freedom for which it stands.

50 Back beer is currently supporting four national veteran support organizations, including the USO, Homes for Our Troops, the Ahern Family Charitable Foundation, and America’s VetDogs. More information about the charities can be found at http://www.50back.com/charities/

“Veterans and their families sacrifice every day for the rest of us. We wanted to find a way to recognize their efforts,” said Kimberly Rogers, Co-founder of 50 Back Brewing Company. “When North Carolina residents toast the sacrifices that their brave service men and women make daily with our product, they can actually feel they are making a difference in their lives,” she says.

50 Back is distributed through Tryon Distributing Company and is available at all participating Harris Teeter stores throughout the State of North Carolina.

“We’re proud to bring 50 Back to North Carolina,” said Jennifer Thompson, Director of Communications at Harris Teeter. “We always look for ways that Harris Teeter can support military families and veteran organizations. As expected, 50 Back has been warmly received by our customers,” she says.

Tryon Distributing Company, a wholesale distributor of fine domestic and imported wines and high quality beers, spearheads the distribution of 50 Back across North Carolina. “We strive to offer a product of the highest quality to customers across North Carolina. 50 Back fits that category, not only because of the quality of the beer, but also because of the quality of their mission,” says Brad Johnston, President of Tryon Distributing. “Our customers appreciate this initiative and have generated a tremendous demand for the product,” he says.
