CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS OLDE MECKLENBURG BEER DINNER!
FORT MILL, S.C. – Attention all beer aficionados, the Charlotte Knights will hold a beer dinner at Knights Stadium on Tuesday, May 3. The Knights and Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, the official beer garden sponsor of the Knights and Charlotte’s hometown brewery, will hold a special beer dinner that will pair Olde Mecklenburg’s fresh beer with food choices to satisfy your palate. The dinner will take place beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the Mission Foods party deck during the May 3 game against the Columbus Clippers.
The course for the evening and the beer pairing will be as follows:
1st Course: Bavarian Pretzels and Peanuts paired with Mecklenburger Bavarian Lager. First brewed in 2010, Mecklenburger is a “lagerbier” pours a crystal clear golden/straw blonde color. Super smooth and easy to drink, Mecklenburgers slightly malty character is perfectly balanced with just the right amount of noble Bavarian hops. A great refresher on a hot day and/or the perfect choice when you want something flavorful yet just a bit lighter. Pairing with Mecklenburger are Angelika’s Pretzels from the Fine Swiss Bakery located in Charlotte.
2nd Course: Grilled Boneless Marinated Chicken Breast, Southern Style BBQ Ribs, Mesquite Rib-eye Steak, Grilled Seasonal Vegetables and Mashed Potato Bar paired with OMB Copper. Olde Mecklenburg Brewery’s flagship beer, Copper is an authentic Düsseldorf style “Altbier.” Technically, OMB Copper is ale due to the type of yeast it’s made from (Obergärig or top fermenting yeast). OMB uses authentic ingredients in our Copper Altbier, including expensive (but worth it) noble Bavarian hops. We also adhere to traditional, time consuming, costly decoction brewing techniques to produce this copper hued, amazingly satisfying “lagered ale.”
3rd Course: Warm Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream paired with Frueh Bock Spring Seasonal. This deep golden Bock lager is malty sweet with a touch of fruity, almost citrusy notes that linger on the palate. And although this Helles Bock/Maibock-style beer has higher alcohol content, it is not at all obvious to the taste. More than a month of lagering results in a very smooth character.
Tickets are $40 in advance, $45 day of the event and include a ticket to that night’s game and beer dinner. Diners must be 21 to participate. To purchase tickets, please call the Knights box office at 704-357-8071 or go online to charlotteknights.com for more information.

ASHEVILLE BREWING TO CAN THEIR BEERS & GETS DISTRO
Asheville Brewing has signed a distribution agreement with Budweiser of Asheville, which has been greatly growing its craft beer portfolio. The company will place Asheville Brewing’s beers in its 12-county distribution area.
As production ramps up, those beers will be sold in grocery stores, convenience marts, restaurants, bars and festivals all over the mountains. Look for Asheville Brewing’s Shiva IPA and Ninja porter first, but others will follow.

GEORGIA BEGINS GROWLER RETAIL SALES
Sooooo…. why can’t North Carolina??
…But at 5 p.m. on April 14, Hop City owner Kraig Torres will be the first to sell growlers in Atlanta when he opens the new “growler station” at his Westside beer and wine shop.
“We are finally bringing metro Atlanta in line with the beer-drinking population outside the state of Georgia,” Torres said. “We’ll have 16 rotating taps, primarily with beers that aren’t available in bottles.”
Four months ago, partners Paul Saunders, Denny Young and Sean Galvin opened the first Georgia growler shop, the Beer Growler in Athens. But first they had to go to the Department of Revenue for help.
“We were the ones responsible for changing the law at the state level,” Saunders said. “We basically wrote the legislation the department approved for us to be able to fill glass bottles.”
A few weeks ago, Sachin Patel, owner of Athens 5 Points Bottle Shop, opened another Athens store, 5 Points Growlers, pouring more than 40 craft beers in growlers.

“We’re growing by one or two bars or restaurants per week,” Ratkowski says. “It’s probably 50-50 right now between on-site consumption and product sold wholesale. Marginalized, we make more money here because we sell to the pubs at wholesale prices, and they can mark it up however they want.”
Con O’Mahoney, owner of The Bell Tree and O’Mahoney’s, says he has the pale ale and honey wheat on tap at his establishments.
“I think it’s imperative to support local business,” O’Mahoney says. “To have a local brewery is pretty special, considering the area and the demographics that we have here in Moore County. On top of that, it’s pretty darn good beer.”
