World Beer Fest Raleigh

Press release for WBF Raleigh:

All About Beer Magazine’s World Beer Festival (WBF) is pleased to announce that Artsplosure will be the charity partner for the 2012 World Beer Festival-Raleigh. The event returns to the beautiful Moore Square Park in Raleigh for its seventh year on April 14, 2012.

Artsplosure’s focus on building the local art culture perfectly parallels our focus on building the local beer culture.”

Michael Lowder, Executive Director of Artsplosure, notes, “Participation in the World Beer Festival provides great visibility for Artsplosure and gives our volunteers an opportunity for a unique experience. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about beer, enjoy some good beer at the volunteer party after the event and support both the local art and beer communities.”

With the Carolina blue skies setting off the brilliant white of festival tents and vibrant green of Moore Square Park, it is easy to understand why USAToday ranked the World Beer Festival as one of the top ten beer festivals in the country. For one day, the festival team will turn the city park into the best place to experience the world of craft and specialty beer. Few sites on the East Coast can provide such an opportunity for anyone interested in the diversity and beauty of beer.

Floyd Fandango

beer travels

River Company Brewing

Hop_zilla and I spent last Saturday at the Floyd Fandango, a wine, beer and music festival just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in southern Virginia just above the North Carolina border. The low key camp out event featured an all VA winery line up and a small but tasty craft beer booth filled with six VA breweries (Big Daddy’s, Blue Mountain, Bull & Bones, Devil’s Backbone, River Company and Starr Hill). Highland and Foothills represented NC plus Terrapin, Stillwater, Dogfish Head, Breckenridge, Longtrail, Otter Creek (among others) made the trip.

Favorite beers for me included Star Hill‘s Double IPA, Blue Mountain‘s Alt, River Company‘s Peachicot Blonde Ale & Devil Backbone‘s whose 8 Point IPA took the “best of the festival” medal by the judges.

While the promoters billed this as a wine and beer fest the bands featured were top notch: JJ Grey, Acoustic Syndicate, Anders Osbourne, Danger Muffin, These United States all put on entertaining sets especially Acoustic Syndicate who closed out with the Who’s Baba O’Reilly!

A quick trip through the town of Floyd I stumbled upon a gift shop with in impressive beer section in the back. I took home some 21st Amendment, Firestone Walker, Yard’s, Geary’s and others.
