50 Back Lager

Press release explains that beer you might of seen at Harris Teeter:

Pepperell, MA (April 25, 2011) –North Carolina is the second state in the US to carry 50 Back, The Brew of the Brave. The American-style lager, which donates 50 percent of its profits to veteran organizations, is now available in Harris Teeter stores statewide.

50 Back beer was created by Massachusetts residents Paige Haley and Kimberly Rogers. Newcomers to the beer industry, Haley and Rogers came up with the idea of 50 Back after searching for a way to give back to Troops and Veterans. For every purchase of 50 Back, the company donates half of its net profits to charities committed to supporting veterans and active duty service members and their families, all of whom who have sacrificed much to protect this nation and the freedom for which it stands.

50 Back beer is currently supporting four national veteran support organizations, including the USO, Homes for Our Troops, the Ahern Family Charitable Foundation, and America’s VetDogs. More information about the charities can be found at http://www.50back.com/charities/

“Veterans and their families sacrifice every day for the rest of us. We wanted to find a way to recognize their efforts,” said Kimberly Rogers, Co-founder of 50 Back Brewing Company. “When North Carolina residents toast the sacrifices that their brave service men and women make daily with our product, they can actually feel they are making a difference in their lives,” she says.

50 Back is distributed through Tryon Distributing Company and is available at all participating Harris Teeter stores throughout the State of North Carolina.

“We’re proud to bring 50 Back to North Carolina,” said Jennifer Thompson, Director of Communications at Harris Teeter. “We always look for ways that Harris Teeter can support military families and veteran organizations. As expected, 50 Back has been warmly received by our customers,” she says.

Tryon Distributing Company, a wholesale distributor of fine domestic and imported wines and high quality beers, spearheads the distribution of 50 Back across North Carolina. “We strive to offer a product of the highest quality to customers across North Carolina. 50 Back fits that category, not only because of the quality of the beer, but also because of the quality of their mission,” says Brad Johnston, President of Tryon Distributing. “Our customers appreciate this initiative and have generated a tremendous demand for the product,” he says.

History of Brewing in Wilmington NC

I came across this interesting article by Robby Nelms of the Star News of Wilmington. In it Nelms describes the brewing business in the 1800′s and the Virginia based companies that ran them:

“The Portner Brewery at Eighth and Brunswick was hugely successful. In its heyday, it had the capacity to hold up to 300 barrels of beer. With such brews on tap as the “Hotbrau,” the “Vienna Cabinet” (a lager) and the “Tivoli,” Portner’s brews were the talk and taste of the South.

The name Tivoli was a rather whimsical marketing idea. Reverse the order of the letters and you get, “I lov it.” Good beer and good marketing made Portner a brewing legend, and a huge part of America’s, and Wilmington’s, brewing history.”

I’ve already made a post about this one so here it is again: The Downtown Asheville Oktoberfest is a “locals only” beer and food fest featuring only six breweries, three restaurants and one mustard maker!

“The event will feature beer tastings from local breweries including Highland Brewing, Asheville Brewing Company, Pisgah Brewing, Green Man Brewery, Craggie Brewing and French Broad Brewing Company. Many brewers are featuring seasonal ales for Oktoberfest, and will be on hand to discuss their beers.”

Also, Wall Street restaurants Cucina 24, Jack of the Wood and The Market Place will be preparing authentic German food fare served with local mustard from the Lusty Monk.

WORLD BEER FESTIVAL – DURHAM
Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park
Tickets are $45

Afternoon Session: 12 PM – 4 PM
Evening Session: 6 PM – 10 PM

Annual WBF from All About Beer Magazine is less than two weeks away and tickets are still available. Usually this fest will sell out months in advance. It makes me wonder … what’s up with that? Are there too many of these festivals? Whatever the case may be this one of the oldest sampling fests in the state. The brewery list was not available but I would suspect a lot of North Carolina and regional brewers among some of the bigger nationals brands.

WOLF BEER & WEREWOLVES

From NEWS 14 Carolina, follow the link below for video: We all know what vampires drink on “True Blood”, but what about the werewolves?

Wolf Beer featured on True Blood

Wolf Beer featured on True Blood

It is North Carolina’s Wolf Beer. Owner Jonathan Olson got a call from HBO about using his beer on the series earlier this summer. Olson said he was against the idea at first, until a friend told him about the huge popularity of the show.

Now Olson is starting to see the benefits of collaborating with a hit show.

“Just from small product place meant, you know quick shots of where you would see our stuff in the bar. You would have to really be looking for it, but we have gotten a lot of consumer enthusiasm. We’ve even gotten some business from it so it’s been very good for us,” said Olson.

Olson signed a release form so the beer could be discussed on the blue ray DVD of the third season. There are three varieties of Wolf beer in more than 50 locations of Wilmington and elsewhere on the east coast.

It’s also distributed to Virginia and Pennsylvania.
